We have been experiencing problems with some of our FBO areas not getting the coverage they should. Also putting management responsibilities onto the Dispatchers has not worked out so well. So here is the solution.
Starting August 1, 2003, we are going to assign Senior Captains as temporary Hub Captains. This assignment will not be permanent. It will rotate around to each of the Senior Captains in turn and we'll try to keep the areas different each time the rotation changes. Right now the rotation period will be for two calendar months.
What are the duties and responsibilities of a Hub Captain? Glad you asked.
The Hub Captain will be management's representive in that area. Think of yourself as a mini Boss. You are in control of that operations area. Well, within reason.
Once he is assigned to an area the Hub Captain will need to fly to that FBO. They will need to restrict their flying to that area for the time they are assigned. Going AWOL is sure to bring the wrath of senior PGA management.
Their main real function is to keep and eye on charters being flown in their area. If there are no pilots flying in their assigned area, they should start asking for pilots on the forum. If they get no response, then screams, threats, poutings, and tantrums are in order.
Their other duties are mainly role playing. They will have to deal with the Dispatchers on a day-to-day basis, as well as public relations, government officials, FAA inspections, maintenance issues etc, etc, etc. The possibilities are virtually endless.
The assigned pilots are encouraged to make as much of their assignment as they can. But you can do as little or as much as you like. As long as you stay in your area and monitor charter activity there, the senior PGA management will stay off your back. That's what you really want.
